The New Surface Pro: 5th Generation

Microsoft’s Surface Pro has been a hit since its first release. You will find that, like the generations prior this release, this new launch will have the same core concept and functions as its predecessors. Why mess with a good thing, right?

Microsoft Surface Pro 5th Generation Has A Lot Going on Beneath the Surface

Despite those similarities, Microsoft claims that there have been a lot of internal improvements made to the Microsoft SurfacePro 5th Generation, which has made it technology news all over the nation. A total of 800 new custom parts we introduced to this mode.  This was according to the Microsoft Surface Chief, Panos Panay.

Apart from the unexpected change in components, Microsoft also dropped the numbering scheme that their products have now become known for. Now, they’re simply calling it the move, however, Microsoft chose to drop the numbering scheme in favor of calling it simply the “new Surface Pro”. This product releases in 26 different countries, from the US and UK to India and Taiwan, on June 15. You can still pre-order them now.

The most basic version of the Surface Pro you can pre-order comes with an Intel Core m3, but you can choose between 2  Intel Core i7 or 3 Intel Core i5 options too. These processors are all 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake units, and the GPU can be easily upgraded to Intel HD 620 or 640 from Intel HD Graphics 515 and 520. They’ve even added an LTE option, which can support both and eSIM micro SIM. This feature comes with an additional price though. With all these options and new features, it’s up to your to pick which on suits your needs and budget the best.

What remains the same are the memory options, which still ranges from 4GB to 16GB, while the storage 128GB to 1TB. This model has a 13-hour and half worth of battery life and comes with hinges that you can move deeper. It can even lay nearly flat on a table. The Surface Pro is light and easy to carry around, weighing about 784 grams. That’s good news for most professionals who loved the sleekness and compactness of the previous models.

All these features will cost you anywhere from $799 to $2,699. At $799, you will be getting the 128GB base model. It has an Intel Core m3. That latter price will get you all the add on features mentioned above – the biggest storage, the best processor and the best memory. You can also add Type Cover keyboards, which costs around $129 to $159. In comparison, its most recent predecessor has just been discounted to $699 at the Microsoft store.

Microsoft Windows Server 2016

Microsoft Windows Server 2016 became available to the public in October and is now being used by customers everywhere.  Our Tampa Microsoft training center is here to point out the new features with Windows Server 2016.

Windows Server 2016 has a variety of new features that bring users into the next stage of Windows technology.  Some of these features include:

Active Directory Federation Services

Active Directory Federation Services provides access control and single sign on across a wide variety of applications.  In Windows Server 2016, AD FS enables three new options for sign on without passwords.  This will allow businesses and organizations to avoid the risk of stolen or phished passwords.  It will also allow you access without a password for compliant devices, making sign-in easier for users.

Storage Spaces Direct

This features allows you to build available and adaptable storage by using servers with local storage.  This means that industry standard servers with local storage can now be used in a way that will be easier, more adaptable, and will allow organizations to use storage devices that were not able to be used in the past.  

Nano Server

Nano Server has been updated to include a module for building Nano Server images.  Nano Server has a much smaller installation footprint that the graphical user interface installation. If you are using the server, these updates make a convincing argument to using Nano.

  • There are less updates and reboots needed
  • It can be used across servers and physical sites
  • Nano hosts the most common Windows Server workloads
  • Nano is ideal for remote management

Containers

Microsoft and Docker development have worked together to bring you Docker-based containers.  This will allow you to isolate applications and services. The Windows Server Container is for workloads that are able to run on the same server without causing alarm.  This means they are low-trust.  Alternatively, the Hyper-V container is completely isolated.  This is for high-trust workloads.

Shielded VMs

Windows Server 2016 shielded VMs allow for better and more fine-tuned control over Hyper-V VM access.  You can even ensure that different Hyper-V admin groups can access only their designated VMs.  

Linux Secure Boot

Secure Boot is part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface specification.  This protects a server during startup against boot-time malware.  You can now enact Linux VMs under Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V without having to disable the Secure Boot feature, which is a brand new capability.

What You Need to Know About Windows 10

If you are a Microsoft user, you know that many tech experts had issues with the format and technology of Windows 8.  As usual, Microsoft not only fixed the bugs, they came out with a bigger and better version.  The long anticipated Windows 10 has more features, is user friendly, and provides the latest in OS technology.  The new interface has many exciting things to unlock.  Here’s what our Microsoft official courseware instructors think you need to know about Windows 10.

The Return of the Start Menu

Windows 10 has brought back the very missed Start menu.  Now, you have the option between a higher tech version of the classic Start menu, and the Start screen that materialized in Windows 8.  You can customize your Start menu by pinning certain applications and programs to the Start menu.  You can add and remove items so that your Start menu gives you quick and customized access.

Multiple Desktops

You could always run a few apps at once on Microsoft.  You can run Word while running Google Chrome, and Excel.  Sometimes, though, this can get confusing.  Enter, the multiple desktop feature.  Now, you can use multiple desktops and flip between them with ease.  Tech professionals love and appreciate this addition, because it allows them to easily manage their workstation.

Fingerprint Locks

In the past, fingertip access was an external feature or built into your laptop.  Now, any touchscreen Windows 10 user can add extra security to their computer with fingerprint locks.  For tech professionals who handle sensitive and extensive material, this added level of security is a desirable feature.

Microsoft Edge

Say goodbye to Internet Explorer, and Hello to Microsoft Edge.  Internet explorer had multiple limitations that made it obsolete to industry professionals.  Now, Windows has developed Microsoft Edge, a newer, more updated browser with advanced features that bring it up to speed with other browsers of its kind.  It even allows extensions, one of the major missing components of IE.

Cortana

If service is your favorite thing, Cortana is your own personal assistant.  This digital assistant feature enhances every aspect of Windows 10.  Among other capabilities, you can use Cortana to make requests, customization, and use voice command.

Not only is it user friendly, it has incredible speed and built-in security that will keep your computer safe. A report by WinBeta shows 50 million devices now run Windows 10! Have you tried Windows 10 yet? Well, after reading this article, you might jump onto the band wagon.

Amazing features of Windows 10:

Familiar Screens

Windows 10 uses screens and features very similar to Windows 7. This allows users to navigate easily through different screens. This is very convenient for users who have a hard time adjusting to new operating systems. With the ease of familiar options and screens, upgrading to the new version is very simple.

Microsoft Edge is a new feature that allows you to multi task and increases your production. Support for Windows Server 2003 ends July 2015 – Make Migration a Priority

Microsoft recently released a report on the risks that enterprises will face by not migrating to a new operating system. Migrating over to the new system should be a priority among all organizations still utilizing the legacy Windows Server 2003, as users will no longer have support. Learn the risks and recommendations on how to get migration to Windows Server 2012 & Azure going within your organization.

Risks & Recommendations
Some of the problems and risks that IT Departments will realize are:

Compromised business applications that open the door for theft and other security concerns
Applications that don’t operate properly and display error messages constantly because the old system is just not compatible with the other systems and errors with the old system cannot be corrected
Regulatory & Compliance requirements
Leaders of these Organizations who are unaware of the risks, will still be liable for issues that will arise.
The recommendations include:

The IT department should create a report that outlines all the risks and downfalls that staying on Windows Server 2003 will mean to your company.
This report needs to be provided to the team leaders so that they can understand the risks, ask questions, and be prepared to talk to the decision makers for support of the migration to get funding.
Do these as soon as possible so that migration is completed before July of 2015. Problems that arise with Windows Server 2003 will not be supported, causing more issues with the organization’s business processes.
